Travel lite - with a little one now in tow, that's our new motto. But with two self-employed parents operating three companies and every vacation being a 'working vacation,' that can be hard to do when it comes to our IT.
Our solution is world-wide access. We use a combination of access methods to gain control of our home personal computer and work computers so that within moments, from wherever in the world we might be, we can get to what we need quickly.
GoToMyPC and LogMeIn Pro are two excellent remote access internet based programs we recommend to all clients. We maintain subscriptions to both, because redundancy is our middle name, and in 5+ years of continued use have never had a challenge in accessing our home systems. As an added benefit, the programs even allow remote printing at your location - so if you accidentally forget something on your home computer or need to access a client's print out - it comes to wherever you are (provided you have a printer, of course). We carry a small netbook on our travels - really nothing much bigger than an iPad, but with the added features of a built-in keyboard and mouse. And while we have a Verizon Wireless Mobile Internet card for true connectivity everywhere we might be, we find plenty of free connection opportunities in most of our travel destinations (coffee shops, public libraries, most hotels and resorts, book stores). The Wi-Fi Free Spot (http://www.wififreespot.com/) lists by state and city free internet locations.
